How to measure windows like a pro
In just 5 simple steps, you can measure your window like a professional.
Tools Needed:
- A metal measuring tape
- A pencil or pen
- The Factory Direct Shades Measuring Guide (or any paper will do)
Step 1: Label Windows
Label each window being measured with descriptive labels like:
- Master Bedroom left
- Game Room second from left
- Living Room Left Wall Left Window
Step 2: Measure Depth
- For each window, measure the depth of the window frame, from the wall side to the glass side.
- Always measure to the nearest 1/8 of an inch
- Mark down the depth of each window
Note: if your depth is smaller than 4 inches, then Outside Mount is your only option. A depth of 4 and 6/8 inches is required for flush Inside Mount.
Step 3: Width
- Take 3 measurements for each window: top, middle, and bottom
- Measure to the nearest 1/8 of an inch
- Mark down all 3 measurements for each window
Inside Mount: Measure the window frame from edge to edge. The smallest measurement is your width.
Outside Mount: Measure the moulding outside the frame from edge to edge, then add at least 3 inches. The largest measurement is your width.
Step 4: Height
- Take 3 measurements for each window: left, center, and right
- Measure to the nearest 1/8 of an inch
- Mark down all 3 measurements for each window
Inside Mount: Measure the window frame from top edge to bottom edge (window sill). The largest measurement is your height.
Outside Mount: Measure where you want your shade to start and where you want it to end. The largest measurement is your height.
Step 5: Check your measurements
Every professional double checks their measurements. It is important to verify your measurements by measuring again and validating for inconsistencies.
